Elena Gold on Ukrainian-Russian history ...
Ukraine has a better climate, better soil, better positioned in Europe — Russia is jealous of all of that.
Ukraine is more ancient than the Russian Federation.
Moscow was founded in the 666th year since the date of Kyiv being established. (Yeah, I got chills when realized it as well.)
Moscow celebrates its birthday in the second week of September, while Kyiv celebrates it on the last Sunday of May. It’s 665 years and 3 months difference.
When Moscow was first mentioned in chronicles in 1147, Kyiv was a famous kingdom and a trading centre for centuries.
Some Kyiv princes subjugated the peoples living in the area where they built an outpost called “Moscow”, then it was overrun by Mongols — and the Moscow princes partnered with Mongols and began fighting against Kyiv-ruled principalities.
Muscovy princes interbred with Mongols and adopted their practices.
When the Mongol empire collapsed, Muscovites began moving East.
That’s why there were 85 federal subjects (regions) in Russia before it invaded Ukraine in 2014 — many of these are national enclaves, which the Muscovites subjugated during several centuries of expansion. That’s why the official name of Russia is “the Russian Federation.”
The issue between Russia and Ukraine is that Russia says that Ukraine shouldn’t exist and that Ukrainians should be Russians, they should speak the Russian language instead of the Ukrainian language, that Kyiv should be viewed as a Russian city.
That’s basically the issue.
The Russians say that Ukraine shouldn’t exist.
The Ukrainians want to exist.
As simple as that.
