Russian forces are now just a mile from Pokrovsk, the last major Ukrainian stronghold in Donbas under Ukrainian control. Russia's economy is growing at a massive 4% annual rate, with inflation at a surprisingly modest 9%. Has Russia won the war?


Pokrovsk is a very difficult target.

The Russians are indeed getting closer to the city but taking it it would be a costly and possibly pointless exercise

the city is not massive and most inhabitants have probably gone

the main objective is most likely the train station

but the Russians would have to go though house by house and street by street to take the city.

It would cost the Russians thousands of lives.

This may be a city of strategic importance to ease Russian operation in the area but I doubt it would deliver a victory for Russia

UPDATE 08/08/2025

as predicted the Russians have gone into the city and have indeed targeted the train station/main train hub. They are going into the surrounding streets too. The Russians are moving slowly and this is probably costing them a lot of lives otherwise they would be moving quickly. It does not look like the Russians are making attempts to encircle the city
