How much coverage is there of Alina Kabaeva in the media in Russia, or should everything around her be a secret? If she is Putin's mistress, why is it not officially known?
Former gymnastics champion Alina Kabaeva and Vladimir Putin live together. They are parents to 2 young boys, born 2015 and 2019.
We know it because some foreign teachers who were hired for the boys, told their stories.
The teachers didn’t see either Kabaeva or Putin; Kabaeva’s sister was introduced to the teachers as “the kids’s mother” (investigative journalists talked to teachers and identified the woman), but after performing in a competition, the kids were running to another female, who was hiding behind the tinted glass in a viewing box.
There was also the father, who was bringing the kids toys and presents, after returning from trips. The teachers lived on a massive property in their own quarters. There was a lot of security personnel; the kids barely meet any other children, except when participating in competitions. In addition to gymnastics, the kids are doing a lot of other sports, learn languages, etc.
Both kids are doing gymnastics—which is what Kabaeva’s passion is. She even hosts a gymnastics festival named “Alina” in Sochi—that’s one place where she still appears in public, even after the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine. (I found reports on her appearance from April 2025.)
Alina Kabaeva.
The fact that Putin and Kabaeva live together isn’t a secret in Russia. All top government officials and so called “elites” are aware of that. It’s just not something discussed in the media.
Putin and Kabaeva met for the first time when she was under 18—he was already the president of Russia when she won bronze at Sydney Olympics in 2000. Alina was 17.
Kabaeva was a “pet student” of the gymnastics trainer Irina Viner, who was the wife of Putin’s close ally Alisher Usmanov. Young Alina even lived in their house.
Putin was honoring Russian athletes after the Sydney Olympics; this is where the young gymnast reportedly met the Russian president, as part of the team.
4 years later, Kabaeva won gold at the Athens Olympics.
By the Russian standards, at the age of 21, she was “too old” to participate in another Olympics after “failing” to win her first one, but she made the team and scored the gold.

Kabaeva was involved with a singer Murat Nasyrov; he even wrote a song for her, “My Alina.”
Nasyrov fell out of a window in Moscow in January 2007.

By that time, apparently, Putin and Kabaeva were already involved. Viner and Usmanov played a big role in that.
Alina Kabaeva with her trainer and “second mother” Irina Viner—both handed state awards.
Reportedly, while already being involved with Putin, Kabaeva gashed to a female friend that Nasyrov was the best lover she ever was with.
Short time later, he fell out a window.
Putin and his first wife Liudmila announced their divorce in 2013.
She has since remarried and she’s a very rich woman. They had 2 daughters, Maria (1985) and Katerina (1986); both now have top positions within the Russian state structures.
- Maria, a medical doctor, is heading longevity and genetics research (Putin dreams to live to the age of 150; he frequently talks about it).
Katerina Tikhonova (left) and Maria Vorontsova (right). It’s typical for Russian politicians to assign different surnames to their offspring.
- Katerina is shaping to become the “grey cardinal” of the Russian politics—Kirill Dmitriev, who is negotiating “the Russia-Ukraine peace deal” via the U.S. mediation, is married to Katerina’s best friend. Katerina also lobbied the appointment of Andrei Belousov as the defence minister, after Putin’s long-term buddy Shoigu was fired in 2024.
From what I understand, Putin only married Liudmila because otherwise he couldn’t get a post in East Germany: you had to be married with kids. You couldn’t build a career in the KGB as a bachelor. You weren’t viewed as reliable.
After his divorce, Putin terminated media access to his private life. In early 2014, Russia invaded Ukraine, and with Putin and Kabaeva apparently trying for a child at the time (it had to be a son for Putin; he already had 2 girls), security-obsessed Putin obviously chose to keep it secret.
The medical doctor in Switzerland who delivered Kabaeva’s kids died in 2023. Dr. Natalia Thiebaud Kondratieva was a Russian-born Swiss gynecologist, she died on February 24, 2023, the 1st anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Nothing suspicious.
Nothing at all.
