As of early 2026, the Institute for the Study of War indicates the fifth year of the Russia-Ukraine conflict has started poorly for Vladimir Putin.

That characterized by high-intensity attrition, slow territorial gains, and unsustainable, massive manpower and equipment losses.

This has resulted in continued reliance on high-cost, grinding offensives, such as in the Pokrovsk direction, which hamper the Russian army's ability to achieve a rapid, decisive victory.

Ramifications on the Russian Army:

High Attrition and Resource Burn: Russian forces continue to suffer high casualties and material losses to achieve slow tactical advances. Nearly 40,000 Russian soldiers were killed.

Dependency on Foreign Support: Russia is heavily reliant on Chinese support to sustain its manufacturing and economic capacity, enabling continued aggression.

Strained Logistics: The war has highlighted the critical, vulnerable nature of Russian logistics, with intense efforts to secure railway hubs.

Forced Mobilization: The Kremlin is setting conditions for intensified, involuntary mobilization to bolster army strength.

Degraded Defense Capabilities: Despite attacking, Russian forces face challenges from, and are forced to adapt to, Ukrainian strikes on rear-area logistics and infrastructure.

Strategic Stalemate: Despite some advances, the army is not making the strategic, rapid breakthroughs needed to end the war on Moscow's terms quickly.Institute for the Study of War
