The White House will now take control of deciding who is in the White House press pool
Leavitt says the White House will now take control of deciding who is in the White House press pool, which has long been decided by the press itself, and will bring in “new media” outlets.
Given the action against The A.P., the White House’s decision to choose itself which news outlets get to participate in the pool amounts to a signal to news outlets to follow the White House line or risk being kicked out as well.
I was a Moscow correspondent during the early days of President Vladimir V. Putin’s reign, and this reminds me of how the Kremlin took over its own press pool and made sure that only compliant journalists were given access.
